The Pitch: Arson Cult are a post-hardcore/noise rock trio out of Saskatoon, SK, Canada. FFO: Fugazi, Adolyne, Quicksand
What I Like: I was on the fence as to whether I had time to fit this review in, but then they sampled my favorite scene from Lost Highway on "Children of the Spring," and any friend of Lynch is a friend of mine. In short, if you are a fan of Fugazi, you're going to want to check out Arson Cult. The comparsion against this legendary band is undeniable, from the hypnotic bass hook on "Blisser" to the noisey, improvisational-sounding vocals. It's that same against the grain, DIY atmosphere and philosphy that rocketed the early post-hardcore scene to popularity; and done just as well I might add.
Critiques: There's room for improvement in terms of the overall songwriting. Between the breezy runtime and solid performances, there isn't a point on this album that I find myself bored. That said, it could use a few more standout moments.
The Verdict: Lay Waste To Past Erections is a strong record straight out of some early 90's time capsule. I'm partially convinced that the band didn't write this album and rather bought an old storage unit and found some lost Fugazi B-sides inside. Either way, I'm glad that Arson Cult brought these songs to my attention.
