Mini-Review and Stream: Soul Dissolution

Feb. 16, 2016

Soul Dissolution is a post black group out of Belgium.  They list their infuences as Agalloch, Drudkh, Alcest, Forgotten Tomb, and Raventale.  Their debut full length went live just over this weekend, and I have to say it's quite good.  Their is definitely a shoegaze element in the crushingly depressive atmosphere and purposefully repetetive chord structures, but rather than creating a generic, dull blackgaze album they have created a sound that puts their own signature stamp on the genre.

In addition to the dreary, alternative-tinged guitar work and plodding black metal vocal performance, Pale Distant Light fills out the sound with some lovely atmospheric synth work and even some violen here and there.  The result reminds me quite a bit of one of my underdog fav's last year in Deadspace.  Tracks keep to a slow 4:4 for the most part, but there are some occasional bursts of blastbeat and tremolo to keep things interesting.

Summing it up, I would probably most frequently recommend Soul Dissolution to fans of groups like Deafheaven, but if a hardened metalhead like me who just happens to have a soft spot for The Cure can like it, I think plenty others could as well.  Stream it below and click the BC logo to buy for just 5 Euro.
